Alliance for a New Moffett Field

Proposed Air and Space Center at historic Hangar One

Brief history of Moffett Field.

The land where Moffett Field sits today was originally part of the Bay Area community and owned by local municipalities. In 1930, local citizens raised funds to purchase the land for a naval air station, expecting to reap economic benefits from the facility. The citizens purchased 1000 acres of wetlands for $476,065.90 and turned the property over to the Federal government for $1 on August 2, 1931. Moffett Field served the nation well during World War II and the Cold War. But in the new international climate of the 90s, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended that the Navy leave Moffett. NASA-Ames Research Center then took the field over for research activities.

Situation in 1995.
The field was being operated with a persistent budget deficit, and NASA-Ames Research center was looking for alternatives that would permit it to keep control of the facility while making up for the budget shortfall. NASA-Ames Research Center was considering additional operations at the field, including, but not limited to, air cargo by such companies as Federal Express, UPS and DHL (flights starting at 4:30 am ).

The discussions between NASA-Ames Research Center and the air cargo carriers had not taken place in a forum that permitted the public to be actively involved in the process.

Why have we organized?
The residents of the Bay Area have a right to participate in an open and democratic process in which the future use of Moffett Field will be determined. Indeed, we all have an obligation to participate in the process to develop a solution that preserves and protects the quality of life for all residents of the communities directly impacted be the reuse decisions.

What Is Our Mission?
We, the Alliance for a New Moffett Field, are volunteers from Mountain View, Sunnyvale and nearby communities. Our principal goal is to promote an open and democratic process to determine the future use of Moffett Field. We wish to ensure that this valuable resource will serve the interests of our communities, preserving and enhancing our quality of live.

Now, though the use of Moffett Field by air cargo companies is unlikely in the forseeable future, the former Naval Air Station remains an large, underutilized, attractive parcel of real estate. The Alliance continues to monitor and influence decisions about the future of Moffett Field, opposing threats to our quality of life, such as the proposed use of the Moffett runways by general aviation aircraft, and promoting uses that will serve our communities.
