NASA sent a letter to some or all residents in the area of Moffett Field notifying them that this report would be issued soon, and offering to send a copy to anyone who is interested. This report is an evaluation of whether air cargo at Moffett is feasible. NASA's letter said:
"...The United States Air Force is now interested in sponsoring air cargo members of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) at [Moffett]. NASA is considering such operations at [Moffett] because of the importance of the CRAF fleet to our national security. In exchange for access to Government installations, CRAF cargo carriers devote their aircraft to the CRAF fleet, which strengthens the nation's airlift capacity in times of national emergency. In addition, the cargo carriers are expected to significantly reduce NASA's costs for operating [Moffett].Participation of the public in meetings is vitally important. If you would like to receive a copy of the Final EA and notice of the meetings, please write:
"NASA is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) of the potential impacts of cargo operations at [Moffett], and invites all interested parties to play a role in this process. Copies of the Draft Environmental Assessment will be made available at the Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 West Olive Ave., and at other locations. However, if you are interested in receiving the Draft EA and being informed about public meetings on this specific issue, please return the attached form. The Draft EA and notification of public meetings will be mailed to you by the end of June."
