Argument Against Measure J
For Mountain View November 5 election
submitted by the Alliance for a New Moffett Field
MEASURE J: "Should Mountain View support air cargo or other
commercial or civil aviation at Moffett Federal Airfield?"
No! Mountain View should not support commercial or civil air operations
at Moffett Field, such as NASA's proposal for round-the-clock air cargo
flights. It's bad for our quality of life, bad for our local economy, and
bad for the U.S. taxpayer.
Allowing any air cargo operations at Moffett Field would open the door for
increased commercial use of the airfield. Since NASA needs special Congressional
legislation to allow such flights, Mountain View voters have the opportunity
to prevent them by sending a clear message to our Congressional delegation
that we do not want air cargo at Moffett Field.
Thousands more jet takeoffs and landings, including many before dawn, would
disrupt our neighborhoods' peace and quiet. The air cargo companies want
to use Moffett Field because San Jose won't let them fly in the early morning.
NASA claims that few early morning flights will rumble over our homes, but
it cannot and will not make guarantees.
Increased noise will reduce the value of our homes. Airport noise must be
disclosed whenever we sell our homes. Local companies will find it harder
to attract and retain the qualified professionals they need to compete.
Air cargo, in itself, will not make Moffett Field cost-effective. Moffett
is valuable property. Whether by lease or by sale, there are many acceptable
alternatives that would bring in more money for the federal taxpayer.
- Vote NO if you don't want Congress to pass special legislation allowing
commercial air cargo flights at Moffett Field.
- Vote NO if you don't want to be stuck with a commercial airport in Mountain
View.
- Vote NO if you don't want to hear jets at 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning.
- Vote NO if you believe that local communities should explore a full
range of future uses for Moffett Field.
