Perle’s connections with Israel are particularly extensive. He is a personal friend of Ariel Sharon, a board member of the Jerusalem Post, and an ex-employee of the Israeli weapons manufacturer Soltam. Writing in the March 10 New Yorker (see this issue’s “Other Voices” supplement), Seymour Hersh reported that in 1983 Perle “was the subject of a New York Times investigation into an allegation that he recommended the Army buy weapons from an Israeli company from whose owners he had, two years earlier, accepted a fifty-thousand dollar fee.
