A coalition of some of the biggest names in foreign policy—including former ambassadors like Robert Oakley, William Harrop and Jack Matlock, and retired generals like Gen. Merrill A. "Tony" McPeak and Gen. Joseph P. Hoar—have released a statement calling for change in the United States' foreign policy focus. "Never in the two and a quarter centuries of our history has the United States been so isolated among the nations, so broadly feared and distrusted," the statement says. It implicates the United States in an overbearing approach to the world and charges that President Bush has shown himself incapable of world leadership. "It is time for a change," the statement says. Even more tellling: Many of the officials say they voted for President Bush.
