Bush Declares War on America
by Bart Whiteman

After months of intense saber-rattling at the likes of Syria, Iran, and North Korea, George W. Bush revealed exactly which country was next on his private hit list – America. By nominating Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court he has knowingly set in motion a confrontation that will probably take years to play itself out. Both the right and the left are reacting in a ferocious fashion and putting out the call for funds at a fever pitch. It is like a mobilization in preparation for war.

The fact almost all of the money raised will be spent on spreading ugliness and malice that will generally be unforgiving in its nature and nauseating in its effect does not really make me want to reach for my checkbook to support either side. It raises the question: Is this what we really need right now, or was it what Bush needs right now?

Bush has reached a nadir in his presidency matched in recent times only by Nixon in his darkest Watergate hours. His mismanagement of nearly everything combined with an institutional arrogance running through most of his administration has thrived on creating chaos and fear domestically at strategic moments to deflect probing focus and criticism. The Alito announcement combined with a call for billions of dollars (coming from where?) to fight off the Avian flu will have a large portion of the public ignoring the debacle in Iraq, the steadily growing American body count there, the Libby-Rove conspiracy, the Harriet Miers embarrassment, and other assorted ills. You do have to wonder just how long George will be able to pull off this continued scam.

..... When people stop thinking for themselves, stop playing hard to win fairly, stop calling them as they see them, it’s time to stop the proceedings. When they let others dictate to them what they should do in every case, they should not be allowed to participate. George Bush has shown his true colors. Samuel Alito could do himself and the rest of us some good if the first words out of his mouth when the hearings start over his nomination are aimed at calling off the dogs on both sides who have been set loose to tear the country to shreds.
