Media May Ignore War, But it Goes On

Oh, by the way, the American death toll in Iraq passed the 2,100 mark last weekend, in case you didn't notice. And if you didn't notice, don't blame yourself; those figures are no longer major news. In fact, the war itself is no longer major news.
The major news from now at least until Dec. 15, when Iraq holds its show election, is the economy — our economy — and specifically what effect Christmas shoppers are having on it.
Last Friday was Black Friday in the United States, the day so-called because it is seen by some as the day retailers nationwide hope to get out of the red and into the black as shoppers descend on them en masse.
Of course, every day in Iraq for the Marines and soldiers stuck there is Black Friday, but never mind. The Cheney/Bush administration doesn't want you to dwell on the war in general and the casualties in particular, and the major news media are doing their part to abet that disconnect.
