A Peace Pole for Los Altos

A Peace Pole is a hand-crafted monument that displays the message and wish for peace on each of its four or six sides, usually in different languages. There are more than 200,000 Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world dedicated as monuments to peace. They serve as constant reminders for us to visualize and work for world peace.

A Peace Pole is eight feet tall with the bottom "planted" in the ground. It may be constructed from any material that is environmentally sound. In the United States, most Peace Poles are made from western red cedar, a wood that is a renewable resource.

A Peace Pole may grace a town square, a school, a park, a place of worship, an office or a garden. Or it can be set in a community as an example of how to live in peace.

Planting a Peace Pole can bring people together on an inspiring project to join in a network of peace consciousness. It is also very much in keeping with the values and goals of the residents of Los Altos. The City has appropriate memorials and statuary for our military personnel, and it seems important to pay homage to the peace that they helped us protect.

Los Altos Voices for Peace will ask the City for a permit to place the Peace Pole in a suitable, visible location, and we will raise the funds ourselves and with the aid of co-sponsors.

Citizens and officials in many parts of the world have planted Peace Poles to dedicate their cities and towns to world peace. Los Altos should be among them.
