Mountain View Voices for Peace proposal to the Council on the Patriot Act, September 2, 2003

Mountain View Voices for Peace calls upon the City Council to take a strong stand. We urge the City Council to:

1. Urge repeal of the Patriot Act and its replacement with a law that fights terrorism without undermining our civil liberties.
2. Direct city police not to knowingly cooperate with secret searches conducted under the Patriot Act and to contact the city attorney if asked to do so.
3. Direct library personnel, other staff, and city contractors not to voluntarily provide city records to federal officials and to contact the city attorney if asked to do so.
4. Direct the city attorney to challenge any request for city staff or contractors to comply with provisions of the Patriot Act that appear to violate constitutional provisions against unreasonable searches and seizures.
